British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were among a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
